Shakti Namaste

Hema PatankarAt Vedika Gurukula, we have just completed the celebration of Navaratri, the nine nights of the Devi. In Ayurveda's Gurukula tradition, the Sharad or autumn celebration of the Devi is observed with special attention since it falls during the ritu sandhi, the transition of seasons. Coming at the time of the autumn harvest, these nine nights are a time of fasting on sattvic and cooling, pitta-balancing foods in order to release the accumulated heat of summer and to promote a heightened inner tranquility and spiritual sensitivity. It is a time when the external generosity of nature is mirrored internally. Vedika Gurukula students are studying and experiencing the significance of this festival, through fasting, contemplation, meditation, chanting and journaling. In this way they are learning how to harness greater inner power, which manifests as health in body, mind and spirit.

Laddis & FlowerDuring this auspicious season, I would like to offer warm acknowledgment of NAMA, the National Ayurvedic Medicine Association. The Board of Directors has invited me to serve as one of their members this year. It is a wonderful opportunity to serve the development of the sacred science of Ayurveda in its multiple expressions in the US.

I would also like to acknowledge AAPNA, the Association of Ayurvedic Practitioners of North America, who have honored Vedika Global with their Nalanda Award for Excellence in Ayurveda Education in North America. (see below)

May the sacred science of Ayurveda bring you abundant blessings,
Hema Patankar

Sanghas

From how to purify our own water with the sage Sushruta’s methods of using clay pots filled with sand and charcoal, to understanding water as the great connector of people and nature; from enlivening stale bottled water through careful simmering, to getting real about the downside of drinking of ice water year round: Vedika's September Ayurveda Sangha on Water was a memorable afternoon!

Pratichi at Water Sangha

The Sangha was led by Vedika's Founder, Shunya Pratichi Mathur, who shared memories of growing up in a home steeped in ayurveda, where moonstones, pearls and gomeds were kept in the water to enhance its qualities, where drinking water was carefully exposed to the sun and moon, and where hot water was the first line of medicine. This was contrasted with research data on the unwanted contents within so-called “pure” bottled water, vitamin water etc. Her recollections of the bliss of getting drenched in the first monsoon rains were complemented by personal tales from our wonderful guest Yogashree Raghuramji, Professor of Yoga Darshan from SVYASA Yoga University in Bengaluru, who also spoke about the important relationship between water and the mind.

Vedika's President Hema Patankar spoke about how to prepare Arogyambu, water with the power to promote good digestion and heal a host of afflictions. Ayurveda has made such a deep and detailed science of water as a foundation of good health and a taste of heaven! The Sangha participants live in a society where bottled water, colored vitamin water, soda and iced drinks are the common commodity, and marketing urges them to over-consume these products in ways that regularly contribute to poor digestion. The Sangha presented them with an environmentally friendly, low-cost and personalized science of water they could easily follow and benefit from. The afternoon closed in contemplation of a prayer from the Vedas: How sweet are the Waters, crystal clear and cleansing! Now may these great divine Waters invigorate and protect me.

•Teaching Visit of Shri N. V.
Raghuram

Yogashree N. V. Raghuram, professor of Yoga Sciences at SVYASA Yoga University in Bengaluru and founder of Yoga Bharati in the US, is a visiting Faculty member of Vedika Gurukula. In September he taught a series of classes on Yoga Darshan, particularly Raja, Jnana, Karma and Bhakti Yoga. Students enjoyed not only his stimulating lectures and engaging stories, but also his personal immersion in the knowledge he teaches. A long-time student and exponent of the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Raghuramji also brings the depth of his personal and passionate quest for the experience of God through meditation, knowledge, devotion and service. His teaching stories frequently involved how to practice these yogas while navigating everyday family interactions, or situations at airports and in offices. In the spontaneous spirit of Gurukula education, students also loved the wisdom he shared while driving to and from the airport, or while sitting with him casually after meals.

Vedika's Shunya Pratichi Mathur spoke at Yoga Bharati's workshop at the India Community Center in Milpitas on Yoga and Medical Practice, which was led by Yogashree Raghuramji and his wife Dr. R. Nagarathna, the chief Yoga Therapy Consultant and Dean of the Division of Yoga and Life Sciences at SVYASA. The aim of the workshop was to present research on yoga and its role in management of chronic diseases, and to promote increased collaboration of yoga practitioners with medical practitioners.

•Medicinal Herb Garden Visit

Vaidya Mahesh Sabade took a group of students to explore a local medicinal herb garden. Nestled amongst the hi-tech companies in Emeryville, herb cultivator Richard Koenig nurtures healing herbs and sacred plants, especially those that are prized in the Ayurvedic and Chinese traditions. We found Tulsi, Neem, Kumari, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Haridra, Hing, and many more herbs that students are studying in class. Vaidya Maheshji pointed out the amazing characteristics of the leaves and flowers of these humble plants with huge medicinal qualities. Students soaked up the healing energy of the plants and their fragrance. You can explore at www.healingspiritplants.com.
