The Sarayu Parampara carries the nondual wisdom of the Vedas through a householder lineage rooted on the sacred banks of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya, India.

For generations, this wisdom has been passed directly from teacher to student as a lived path of awakening. It teaches that liberation is not separate from life, but can be discovered amid family, work, devotion, responsibility, and the duties of the world.
Ancient wisdom for life today
The Sarayu Parampara has lived not only in places of retreat, but in homes, courtyards, kitchens, temples, and family life. Its path brings together Advaita Vedanta, devotion, meditation, dharma, and reverence for the Divine Mother.

Acharya Shunya
First Female Head of the Sarayu Parampara
Raised in the home of her Guru, Acharya Shunya began her spiritual education at the age of nine. For fourteen years, she received direct training in the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Advaita Vedanta, Yoga, Ayurveda, worship, and meditation.

Today, through her books and teachings, she carries this ancient lineage to seekers worldwide, expressing its wisdom in a language modern students can understand without diluting its traditional source.
The Gurus Who Carried the Stream
The Sarayu Parampara extends through generations of teachers preceding those shown here. Acharya Shanti Prakash’s father and grandfather were also teachers in this living tradition.

Acharya Shanti Prakash
1870–1958 · Revered Elder of the Sarayu Parampara

A householder sage and revered teacher of Advaita Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita, Badey Baba brought Vedic wisdom into public and community life. He established the Sadharana Sabha Sangha, the Vyavaharika Vedanta magazine, and the Arogya Mandala, creating enduring pathways for spiritual study, practical Vedanta, healing, and service.

1900–1990 · Guru and First Teacher of Acharya Shunya

A scholar, healer, and lifelong teacher of Advaita Vedanta, Baba Ayodhya Nath opened the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Yoga, and spiritual Ayurveda as pathways to Self-knowledge. After years of Himalayan tapasya, he guided seekers in daily life and raised and trained Acharya Shunya, entrusting the living teachings of the lineage to her.

Raised in the home of her Guru, Acharya Shunya began her spiritual education at the age of nine and trained with Baba Ayodhya Nath for fourteen years. As the first female spiritual head of the Sarayu Parampara, she carries its Advaita, Yoga, Ayurveda, and Shakti wisdom to contemporary seekers across cultures, without diluting its source.
A Living Lineage Today
Through Acharya Shunya, the teachings are not preserved solely in memory. They are studied, questioned, practiced, and embodied by students across cultures and countries.

Some receive the teachings for their own awakening. Others undertake deeper study and service, helping preserve the parampara with fidelity, humility, and care.
Vedika Global
The Parampara’s Institution in the West
Vedika Global is the educational and spiritual institution through which the Sarayu Parampara has taken root in the West.
​
Founded by Acharya Shunya in May 2007 as a California 501(c)(3) religious and educational nonprofit, Vedika Global was created to give the lineage’s teachings an enduring institutional home. Its purpose is not merely to preserve the wisdom of the past, but to transmit it faithfully through serious study, spiritual practice, community, and service.
From Lineage to Institution
Acharya Shunya founded Vedika Global so that Advaita Vedanta, the four yogas of the Bhagavad Gita, classical Ayurveda, and the wisdom of the Divine Mother could be taught without fragmentation or dilution.

The founding Board included Suhasini Janet Dobrovolny, Hema Patankar, and Sanjai Mathur. Together, they helped translate a lineage vision into a responsibly governed nonprofit institution capable of serving future generations.
Consecrated Before It Opened
On January 14, 2008, the sacred day of Makar Sankranti, Vedika Global opened its first classes in California.

Before teaching began, the Gurukulam was consecrated through sacred fire ceremonies invoking Lord Ganesha, Maa Saraswati, and Lord Dhanvantari. The first students entered through traditional Upanayanam, affirming that study would be approached with discipline, reverence, and ethical responsibility.

Vedika Global did not open merely as a school. It opened as a sacred place of transmission.
A Gurukulam in the West
In its early years, Vedika Global offered an immersive Gurukulam education in which scripture, Ayurveda, Yoga, meditation, food, service, and community life were studied together.

Students learned not only through lectures, but through sustained practice, satsang, visiting faculty from India, shared meals, community clinics, and daily relationship with the teacher. In this way, ancient knowledge entered Western life without losing its spiritual center.

A Global Gurukulam
Without Borders
Today, Vedika Global is an online educational and spiritual platform serving students across 21 countries. People of all genders, cultures, and religious backgrounds are welcome. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and seekers of many paths study here with confidence in the universal oneness revealed through Vedic wisdom.

The institution’s teachings unfold through three interconnected streams:

Vedic Studies: A guided journey through Advaita Vedanta, the Bhagavad Gita, and the four yogas, leading from spiritual preparation toward direct knowledge of the Self.

Classical Ayurveda: A source-text-based, experiential, and spiritual study of Ayurveda, taught in the living Gurukulam spirit as a sacred science of life and consciousness.

Goddess Teachings: Acharya Shunya’s experiential teachings on Shakti, inner sovereignty, and the Divine Mother, bringing ancient Goddess wisdom into the realities of contemporary life.
Though distinct in emphasis, all three streams share one purpose: to help the seeker move from inherited limitation toward wholeness, spiritual clarity, and direct knowledge of the Self.
Carrying the Flame Forward
The Sarayu Parampara is a sadhu lineage in which both householders and renunciates may dedicate their lives to Self-knowledge, dharma, Guru, and the preservation of sacred wisdom.

Under Acharya Shunya’s guidance, some long-term students undertake deeper vows of study, practice, and service. Sadhvi Ishani and Sadhvi Aparna are among those who help carry the lineage forward through teaching support, spiritual reflection, and dedicated stewardship.

Your Doorway into the Tradition
You do not need to adopt a new religion, culture, dress, or spiritual title to receive these teachings. The doorway begins through sincere study, reflection, practice, and a willingness to know the Self more deeply.

For many, being a sincere student is complete in itself. Some may gradually feel called toward deeper practice and service. Each person’s relationship with the lineage is allowed to unfold naturally.
